Dear K-4 Families,
I hope you were able to review the CARES Values: Supporting All Students resources that were shared last week. Traditionally, the terms "behavior and discipline" in schools describe a code of conduct and punishments assigned to students when they violate the code. We use Supporting All Students in place of the traditional language as a way to reinforce our belief that growth mindset applies to academic, artistic, and athletic endeavors, and to the social-emotional and behavioral domains, as well. It is developmentally expected that K-4 students will make mistakes or need additional support as they increase their skills in the social-emotional competencies. The Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) is a non-profit leader in SEL. The infographic below shows the skills and competencies in the "CASEL Wheel".
The Lincoln School K-4 has a robust continuum of proactive and responsive measures to support students in developing the skills necessary to build social-emotional and behavioral skills and overcome challenges that arise.
-
School-wide Expectations: CARES - Cooperate, Advocate/Ask, Responsibility, Empathy, Self-control
-
Responsive Classroom: All LPS staff are trained in this evidence-based approach to teaching and discipline.
-
Connections: Morning Meeting includes time to learn about and practice social skills.
-
Community Meeting is a monthly gathering to build connections across our school community.
-
Second Step is an empirically based curriculum that offers a holistic approach to building supportive communities for every child through social-emotional learning.
-
Community Support Team (CST) is a collaborative effort to understand and plan for non-academic student needs. The team includes administrators, members of the mental health team, the school nurse, and teachers.
-
Partnering with Caregivers and Outside Providers to ensure we have a shared understanding of how a child is presenting in school and that we are making a collaborative effort to support them with their goals.
-
Recess Support is assigned to provide support when students need support navigating unstructured social situations at recess.
-
Counseling/social skills support for students identified as needing small group or individual support with a member of our Mental Health Team.
-
Collaborative and Proactive Solutions is an evidence-based model of problem-solving that can reduce conflict and improve behavior. K-4 Faculty attended a workshop with Dr. Ross Green and a small group of faculty participated in a more in-depth training.
-
Logical Consequences (determined by staff) which could include a loss of privilege, "break it-fix it", or a time-out.
- Disciplinary Consequences (determined by an administrator) which could include (but is not limited to) a loss of privilege, a meeting with caregivers, the creation of a success plan, or suspension (in- or out-of-school)..
I hope this is informative and that you will join me for a Principal's Coffee discussion/Q&A on March 13 at 8:15 AM.
Sincerely,
Sarah

Lincoln School presents
Rock of Ages Youth Edition
Wed., Mar. 19, 3pm, & Thurs. - Sat., Mar. 20 - 22, 7pm
Tickets at the door from 30 minutes before showtime. This family-friendly version of the Broadway show features a soundtrack of great songs from the 80s and a classic musical theatre storyline. Two young people move to the big city to pursue their dreams of stardom, and a beloved Rock & Roll club is under threat from developers who want to bulldoze it to build a strip mall. A highly-dedicated cast and crew of 75 middle school students, along with dozens of community volunteers, are ready to bring this story to life - all they need is an audience!

FUN COMMUNITY EVENTS FOR A GOOD CAUSE!
After a hiatus from COVID, LPS is restarting the 8th grade trip to Washington D.C. this year! To help defray costs, 8th graders and parents have organized several community events (please see the Save the Dates below). First up is an evening just for grown-ups! On March 16, from 7-9PM, dazzle friends with your uncanny ability to recall random factoids at Trivia Night. Conveniently located at our local gem the Tack Room, $45 gets you admission and appetizers. Come as a team (up to 6) or ready to join one! Trivia goers also get an exclusive first look at items that our generous Lincoln community and 8th graders have donated, which will be available through an online auction. Auction will open to the public afterwards. Register now, as spots are limited!
