• Dear Families,

Did you know that October is fire prevention month? Our K-2 Wellness teacher, Ms. Love, coordinated fire safety presentations with firefighters from the Lincoln Fire Department!

Firefighter Tom and Firefighter Caleb taught K-2 students about smoke detectors and what to do if/when one goes off. They also modeled how to get low and crawl when there is smoke in the room, and to stop, drop, and roll if there is fire on your body. Firefighter Tom and Firefighter Caleb also showed us how to check if there is fire on the other side of the door (feel the door with the back of your hand) and then put a blanket or t-shirt out your window to signal to the firefighters where they are.

Third and fourth grade classes met in the library with Firefighter Ben to review fire safety procedures and guidelines. They learned about smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors, what counts as an emergency, when to call 911 and what to say when calling 911. They discussed making safety plans, and what to do in all sorts of situations, including if smoke fills the room, if you are trapped on an upper floor, if a friend gets hurt, if your clothes catch fire, if a pet is trapped in the house, and what to do when there is someone in the house with a disability that cannot get out.

What can you do at home? Make sure you have a fire safety plan at home that includes how to escape and a meeting spot outside the house. Help your child learn their address - this is the first question they will be asked if they ever need to call 911.

The 4th Grade teachers, Mr. Nickerson, Ms. O'Sullivan and Mr. Reed, were awarded an LSF Grant for an Archeological Dig Workshop. They worked with Jeff Kotkin who runs Archeology 4 Schools. He has extensive experience as a classroom teacher and has a Master's Degree in Historical Archeology with an education focus. Earlier this fall, Jeff came to Lincoln School to spend time with the teaching team to plan the digs, and this week spent 3 hours with each class at Strat's Place, the dismantled playground in between the Hartwell building and Lincoln Road. The students did everything - measured and gridded two dig sites, used mallets to drive the stakes into the ground, wrapped string to mark the boundaries, used trowels to carefully scrape layers of dirt, sifted the excavated dirt, washed and bagged artifacts (anything human-made). This hands-on, experiential experience allows students to literally get their hands dirty and engage in learning that is sure to stay with them well beyond their elementary school years!

It was wonderful to collaborate with community partners and guest educators this week!

    Sincerely,

    Sarah

METRO BOSTON DIAPER DRIVE - Closes this Saturday!

Did you know that SNAP and WIC benefits do not cover diapers?  This leaves many families to make difficult decisions between food, diapers, and other needs.  The annual Metro-Boston Diaper Drive gives all donated diapers to the Somerville WIC office, which serves Lincoln, Cambridge, Somerville, Arlington, Watertown, Lexington, Bedford, and Belmont.  This year’s Drive will run from October 6 - 19.  Please visit mbdiapers.org to make a donation, or click directly on the links to the Amazon and Target registries.  You can also drop loose diapers off at the Lincoln Library.  Please help us get 50,000 diapers onto the babies in the Metro-Boston area who need them!  Read more about why diaper drives like the Metro-Boston Diaper Drive are so important HERE.

    Lincoln’s Historical Scavenger

In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the first days of the American Revolution in April 1775 and Lincoln’s contributions to those efforts, the Lincoln250 Committee is launching a Historical Scavenger Hunt!
Make your way around Lincoln to find 13 historical sites from the 1700s!  Find a location, scan that site’s QR code, read about Lincoln’s 18th-century history, take a selfie, and with your selfie, include an answer to the optional question, and post it to each location’s web page!  Prizes are offered (while supplies last)! Open to all who live, work, or go to school in Lincoln.
The hunt ends on Sunday, October 27, 2024.  For more information and to begin the scavenger hunt, visit https://padlet.com/jlrg/Lincoln250
