Parent Partnerships

Hanscom Primary School parents volunteer countless hours to the school. They help both teachers and children in many different ways. Our parents help make Hanscom Primary the special school that it is:

School Volunteers
Parents can help with School-wide projects. Last Summer a parent landscaped the front of our school. Click here to see the result: Lisa's Landscaping.

Classroom Volunteers
Parents play an important role as partners in the classroom, allowing the teachers to do what they do best - TEACH! Volunteers participate in such activities as:

  • Integrating craft projects: cooking, colonial crafts and games, etc.
  • Reading and language skill development. Including help with Easy Books.
  • Writing and math workshops
  • Assisting when teacher aide is not working
  • Making classroom materials at home
  • Sharing their areas of expertise such as speaking about their profession or hobby
  • Planning seasonal celebrations
  • Reading aloud to the class
  • Going on field trips as chaperones

Project Self Esteem
Project Self Esteem is a 6-week program in Kindergarten which teaches the children how to feel good about themselves while respectfully treating others. Parent groups go to the classrooms to perform skits using Harmony Bear as a mascot. The skits reinforce such lessons and values as: being your own best friend, being kind to others, and staying safe.

Parent Technology Program
Besides the work the parents do in The Publishing Center on the computer, there are other ways parents volunteer their time to the school Technology Program. Even though Macintosh computers are used exclusively by the staff and children, parents who volunteer do not necessary need to have a Macintosh background. Parents help in many ways by: making back-ups of original disks, helping with the displays in the school hallway of children's computer work, learning new software, adding data to hardware and software inventories, etc.

Art
Parents help support the Art Program in many ways. They work in art classes providing group assistance and clean-up, and at home by preparing materials. Many parents donate recyclables such as egg cartons, milk cartons, and styrofoam trays.

Special Events
Many special events would not be possible without the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). Some examples of these special events are: Fundraising, Jump Rope for Heart, US Map Painting Project, Science Night, Ice Cream Socials, School Open House, Membership Drive, and Campbell Soup Label Collection.

The PTO shows its appreciation to the teachers by regularly providing lunches, home baked treats, vegetable trays, or a variety of other healthful foods. Each year, the parents organize a Teacher Appreciation Celebration.
