Welcome to Hanscom Primary School
Happy New Year! Shana Tova! Feliz año Nuevo! Shuvo noboborsho! Xin nian yu kuai! Sehe Bokmanee Bateuseyo! Sawatdee Pi Mai! The joyous ringing in of the New Year is a custom that crosses all cultural boundaries. It is a time to celebrate the accomplishments of the previous year and to set goals for the upcoming year.
In many ways the first day of school is like New Year’s Day. Since I was little, I have always relished in the beginning of a new school year. I vividly remember the night before school started as a young child. There was a special excitement in the air that is difficult to describe in words. I would lay out my first day of school outfit and organize my crisp, new school supplies and then wait with anxious anticipation for the morning to come. That first day was magical – a new beginning, a chance to start fresh, to make new friends and to set lofty goals for the upcoming year. Having not been together as a school family since March 12th, makes this New Year’s Day seem even more special.
After a summer during which the Lincoln Public School put forth a Herculean effort, we are ready for this new year! The school looks pristine, teachers are actively working to prepare the classrooms, school supplies are crisp and new and the excitement is building as we approach opening day. A world of possibilities and opportunities awaits each one of us.
As I write this, I am marveling at how my first year as Principal at Hanscom Primary School went by so fast! I am looking forward to starting this new year by celebrating my accomplishments of last year and setting goals/resolutions for the upcoming year. I would ask that prior to Opening Day you engage your son/daughter in a similar conversation. What is he/she proud of from last year? What are areas for needed growth on which he/she would like to work? What are his/her goals or resolutions for this new year?
As we embark on this new year, I want you to know that our resolution each year is to continually strive to be a better place than we were the year before, and that we take seriously our charge to build and to sustain a culture within our school that is safe and welcoming for all.
The Hanscom Primary School community of learners is ready for this new year. In the words of American poet Edith Lovejoy Pierce, “We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day.”
I look forward to sharing this New Year’s Day with your family.
