ArtsReading/writing/spelling are taught throughout the year. Lit./writing reflects seasonal themes as well as the integration of math, science, social studies and health.
Language/Writing skills:
sentence sense; prewriting skills and strategies; assessments; main idea; paragraph development; organizing ideas in logical sequence.
Reading/Literature: “Rocks,” “Immigration” and “Harvest Themes.”
Language/Writing Skills:
adding description and detail; writing pieces with a beginning, middle and end; paragraph development; writing for various purposes; proofreading.
Reading/Literature: Multicultural themes such as Cinderella tales from around the world.
Language/Writing Skills:
editing, revising; developing research skills; proofreading; expository writing.
Reading/Literature: informational books related to “Sea Mammals and Ocean Life” theme.
Math
Concepts introduced are developed and built upon all year. A year long focus on problem solving. Technology integrated throughout all curriculum areas.
Investigations Units:
“Mathematical Thinking in Grade 3” and “Things That Come in Groups” (multiplication and division); Relationship of math to real life applications; Collecting and representing data.
Investigations Unit:
“Landmarks in the Hundreds” (place value); Time; Money.
AInvestigations Units:
“Fair Shares” (fractions); “Flips, Turns, Area”
(geometry); Measurement skills.
Social Studies
Communities; Current events; Geography; Map skills - ongoing topics are integrated with other content areas all year.
Groups Who Made A Difference
Classroom groups, working as a community; Respect and responsibility; Voters make a difference; Communities of long ago; Plimoth: A Case Study; Immigration.
Global Studies
Multicultural Cinderella tales; Environmental awareness; Geography skills (continue all year).
Cultures & Identities - What is Culture?
“Celebrations” unit - Boston Children’s Museum. Students learn about different cultures in the United States.
