1. The children will have an opportunity to enjoy and explore a wide variety of art materials.
2. The children will work with tools appropriate to their abilities, to develop manipulative skills needed for satisfying artistic expression.
3. The children will be introduced to the elements of design (line, shape, color, texture, space, light and dark) and the principles of design (pattern, rhythm, balance, contrast, emphasis and unity).
4. The children will have opportunities for self-expression, using their imagination, discovery and problem-solving.
5. The children will expand their horizons and be visually inspired by experiencing a variety of artwork from contemporary and past cultures.
6. The children will create bridges between art and the world around them through theme-based integrated curriculum.
7. The children will begin to create a connection with the art community through museum/gallery visits, field trips, visiting artists, parent volunteers and student art displays.
Each class visits the Art room once a week for a 50 minute lesson with Donna Lubin, Primary ArtTeacher. Lessons may include demonstrations, discussions, and group reading of books for inspiration. The Art curriculum sequentially builds on previously learned skills throughout the year. Although all the children will do painting and clay, it may happen at different times for the different grade levels and each grade level lesson has a specific goal and focus. During the year, all the classes will opportunities for painting, drawing, collage (cutting, arranging and gluing pictures), weaving, ceramic (kiln baked) clay, sculpture (three-dimensional structures), printmaking and origami (paper folding). All materials purchased for childrens use are rated AP non-toxic by the Art & Creative Material Institute.
