Mathematics Resources on the Web

The sites listed below are designed for students to use alone or with an adult to reinforce skills, deepen their understanding of concepts and explore different areas of mathematics. All of these sites allow opportunities for students and parents to engage in meaningful explorations and discussions focusing on mathematics.

This is the website of publisher of the math program, Everyday Mathematics, used by K-4 students. The site contains math games and an interactive student reference book. A username and password (distributed by classroom teachers) are required to access the site.

The National Center for Education Statistics has created this site to help students easily create bar, line, area, pie and XY graphs. Students are able to choose the type of graph they would like and enter their own data. The graphs may be printed or downloaded to your computer.

This Thinkport website was designed to help older students, grades 5-8, learn the basics of budgeting, charge/credit, income, inflation, and investments. It offers many activities having to do with money, personal finance, and economics.

The Family Education Network has created this site for learning to count money. Students select coins as they fall from the top of the screen into a piggy bank to reach a give amount. There are two levels to accommodate students.

This site has hundreds of pages of basic math skills. Students may choose a grade level and specific topic to practice. There is interactive practice on every page along with an explanation of the math topic. A great site for students to practice and reinforce basic facts.

This website promotes open-ended and playful explorations of important math concepts. It is an interactive website that provides math explorations, trivia and classroom activities for all ages.

This site is designed for students in grades K-6. There are activities in all strands of mathematics. Students choose the strand and the subject within the strand. Many of the activities illustrate strategies that help illustrate the concept to students. This is a good site for parent/child interaction. Parents are able to work with the child to help make connections.

This site offers younger students the opportunity to interpret line graphs. Students may either answer questions about line graphs or correct “mistakes” in line graphs. A great site for discussion about line graphs!

This site poses math challenges appropriate for children K-5. Every other week a new math challenge is presented in the form of a story. Students are encouraged to solve the challenge in many different ways. The solution may be submitted to “Aunty Math” and Aunty Math posts a reply to all students.

This site funded by the National Science Foundation supports students understanding of mathematics through the use of “virtual manipulatives”, objects that help students visualize relationships in mathematics. This site supports interactive learning at the elementary and middle school levels.

This site is recommended for middle school students. It is a collection of mathematical puzzles designed to stimulate students thinking. There are archives of puzzles and links to other mathematical sites. The puzzles on this site change on a regular basis.
