In keeping with our mission “to provide a high quality learning experience that enables all students to access a broad program of studies”, the Lincoln Public Schools publishes on our website monthly Science Calendars to students at different grade levels. The purpose is to provide meaningful and fun learning experiences outside the classroom where family members can be involved in the education of students, and students can pursue and develop areas of personal scientific interest. The activities presented in the calendar are intended to capture the science that exists all around you, in your backyard, your kitchen, and other areas around your home. These everyday locations provide natural "laboratories" for children's curiosity about the world around them and are easily accessible to all. It is hoped that these activities will easily fit into the natural ebb and flow of family life, perhaps only as conversation topics. While individual teachers and/or teams may decide to use the calendars along with classroom instruction, there is no expectation that students do a certain number of activities - this is not homework – or be responsible for presenting them at school. As your family gets involved with science at home, please keep in mind that the focus is on process not products and that even the simplest of activities with the most basic of materials may need parental supervision and guidance. We welcome your constructive feedback. It will help us move forward as we prepare future activities and resources.
